General Infertility Q & A
I've been trying to get pregnant, but I haven't been able to. Does that mean I'm infertile?
Infertility is defined as being unable to get pregnant after 12 consecutive months of trying. If that describes you, then you should make an appointment with Dr. Gumbs to be evaluated for health or lifestyle factors that might be interfering with your ability to become pregnant.
What are the causes of infertility?
Infertility can be caused by several issues, which can affect either women or men. Some of the most common biology-related infertility causes include:
-
problems with the ovaries that interfere with the release of eggs
-
a heavy layer of mucus in the opening of the uterus (the cervix) that can make it difficult for sperm to make it to the uterus
-
uterine fibroids or polyps
-
uterine abnormalities that can prevent the eggs from becoming fertilized or implanted
-
endometriosis, which occurs when tissue from the uterus grows outside the uterine walls
Women are also less likely to become pregnant as they get older and the viability of their eggs declines.
How will Dr. Gumbs be able to tell if I'm infertile?
Dr. Gumbs uses state-of-the-art technology to determine the underlying cause of your inability to become pregnant. Lab work like blood or semen tests, ultrasound or other diagnostic testing are commonly used to rule out more common causes and can also help determine therapy choices.
What types of infertility treatments are available?
Treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI, also called artificial insemination) are two of the most common treatment approaches, but there are others. Dr. Gumbs will be able to help you determine which treatment option is the best choice for you based on lad test results and health histories for you and your partner.
