Obstetrics Q & A
Why are prenatal exams important?
Prenatal exams are the best way for Dr. Gumbs to ensure your pregnancy is progressing normally and to identify potential issues in their earliest stages when they are most easily managed. They're also important for ensuring you and your baby are getting the best care throughout the entire course of pregnancy, from conception to delivery.
What happens during a prenatal exam?
During your exam, both the nurse and Dr. Gumbs will ask you about any problems or concerns you might have; be sure to tell them if you're taking any medications – even over-the-counter medications or supplements like vitamins or herbs. Your height, weight and blood pressure will be measured, and you may also be asked to provide a urine sample to check for signs of infection or other conditions like diabetes. Dr. Gumbs also will check your belly and measure it, and your ankles may be checked for signs of swelling. During some visits, you may also be asked to provide a blood sample or to have an ultrasound to check on the growth and development of the baby, and Dr. Gumbs may also discuss genetic testing with some patients.
Once I'm pregnant, how often will I need to see the doctor?
The frequency of your visits will depend on how far along you are in the pregnancy as well as whether or not your pregnancy is considered high risk. Healthy moms-to-be typically see the doctor once a month up until week 28, then once every other week until week 36, then once a week until labor and delivery. Patients with riskier pregnancies may need to see the doctor more often. Prenatal exams are very important for the health of you and your baby, so try not to miss appointments, and if you can't make an appointment, call to reschedule right away.
